Duke Angel Network invests in healthy energy drink company MATI Energy

The Duke Angel Network announced today an investment in MATI Energy, a Durham-based company providing a line of healthy energy drinks. Other investors in the round include DUMAC and additional angel investors.

MATI’s energy drinks contains only natural ingredients, including tea brewed from guayusa leaves and fruit juices. The energy sources in MATI have been shown to have a more sustained effect than competing energy drinks, resulting in a smoother, less jittery feeling of energy without a “crash.”

Guayusa, MATI’s primary source of energy, is found in the Amazon rainforest and is nicknamed the “night watchman” by native hunters. Guayusa is rich in antioxidants, potassium, magnesium, and amino acids, making it a healthy source of energy. The company’s proprietary brewing process is able to extract both more energy and more nutrients from the leaves than other methods.

MATI is currently available in convenience and retail stores across North Carolina and in Whole Foods across the southeastern United States. The canned drinks are also available nationwide on This month MATI is launching in Kroger stores in North Carolina and Tennessee.

MATI began with Founder and CEO Tatiana Birgisson brewing her own tea in her dorm room while attending Duke University. After experimenting with different ingredients and brewing processes, Ms. Birgisson began bottling the tea and selling it to classmates. As demand grew, the company partnered with a co-packer and expanded production, first with kegs delivered to businesses and then with cans for individual purchases. MATI won Google Demo Day in April 2015. In March 2016 MATI opened its own production facility. Most recently, Ms. Birgisson was selected as one of Inc’s 30 Under 30 Coolest Entrepreneurs.

While at Duke, Ms. Birgisson won best undergraduate startup in the 2013 Duke Startup Challenge and was part of The Cube entrepreneurial residential community. Since graduating, she has served as a mentor in Duke’s Melissa and Doug Entrepreneur’s program and has used office space reserved for Duke entrepreneurs at American Underground, a coworking space in Durham.

“Because of MATI’s long history of growth with Duke, I’m excited to have the Duke Angel Network as a partner as we continue to grow the business,” said Ms. Birgisson. “I was very impressed by how efficient the due diligence and investment process was.”

“MATI has tapped into an under-served segment of the energy drink market looking for healthier alternatives” said John Glushik, Managing Director of the Duke Angel Network, “The MATI team has a proven ability to drive rapid growth and is poised for continued success.”
